ABOUT KIRK FRANKLIN AND KANYE WEST COLLABO

Is it a crime when a man seeks God and he does not find him?

Christians judge too much…
They judge the lost and they judge people who go to find them…

On the recent slam that sprouted because Kirk Franklin calls Kanye west a brother in a collabo…Let’s see clearly what Hymar David has to say…

Hymar David
On The Kirk Franklin/ Kanye West
Collaboration.
.
Right from when he sang ‘My Life Is In Your
Hands’ Kirk Franklin has stayed my most
beloved radical gospel jammer. Overtime I got
to know Lecrae , Dwayne Trymuf and some
other christian rappers. But Kirk Franklin and
the Family do it for me anyday. ‘Imagine Me’
‘The Blood Song’ ‘Smile’ and ‘Blessings in the
Storm ‘ remain classics I tune into when I am
depressed or down(which is often).
.
So, I have been seeing posts from Christians
on Facebook slamming him for associating
with Kanye West. They argue christian music
is a ministry(rolls eyes a bit). Kanye West is a
child of hell and Kirk’s associating with him
is like light communing with darkness, Jesus
playing ludo with Amadioha etc etc.
.
I ask myself ‘what would Jesus not do?’ Would
Jesus frown at Kirk Franklin or at those
frowning at Kirk Franklin? I ask myself ‘Did
Jesus die for Kanye West?’ If yes, why in
God’s name should we slam Kirk for calling
Kanye a brother? Does Jesus love Kanye West?
Yes. So what is your problem, o thou self-
righteous gnat? Since when did God hire you
to replace St. Peter at Heaven’s Door?
.
Let me digress a bit. How many of these
people know Kanye’s history? How many of
them remember him singing ‘Jesus Walks’
.
Some of the lines which go thus:
.
‘(Jesus walks)
God show me the way because the Devil’s
trying to break me down
(Jesus walk with me)
The only thing that I pray is that my feet
don’t fail me now
(Jesus walk)
And I don’t think there’s nothin’ I can do now
to right my wrongs
(Jesus walk with me)
I wanna talk to God but I’m afraid cause we
ain’t spoke in so long’
.
And:
.
“To the hustlers, killers, murderers, drug
dealers, even the scrippers
(Jesus walks for them)
To the victims of welfare for we livin’ in Hell
here, hell yeah
(Jesus walks for them)
Now, hear ye, hear ye, want to see Thee more
clearly
I know he hear me when my feet get weary
Cause we’re the almost nearly extinct
We rappers is role models: we rap, we don’t
think
I ain’t here to argue about his facial features
Or here to convert atheists into believers
I’m just tryna say the way school need
teachers
The way Kathie Lee needed Regis, that’s the
way I need Jesus
So here go my single dog, radio needs this
They say you can rap about anything except
for Jesus
That means guns, sex, lies, videotape
But if I talk about God my record won’t get
played, huh?
Well if this take away from my spins
Which’ll probably take away from my ends
Then I hope this take away from my sins
And bring the day that I’m dreamin’ about”
.
Instead of judging as is, we should look for
the backstory. Kanye West to me(and on a
spiritual plane) is a haunted, tormented soul
who is still struggling to find his way. The
man once sang ‘(Lord) I want to see thee
more clearly’. That’s one of the most
passionate prayers anyone could ever make.
So what if in his quest to find God, Kanye
missed Him. Are we now to slam him for
that? To judge him for that? The same man
who said :
.
‘ They say you can rap about anything except
for Jesus
That means guns, sex, lies, videotape
But if I talk about God my record won’t get
played, huh?
Well if this take away from my spins
Which’ll probably take away from my ends
Then I hope this take away from my sins
And bring the day that I’m dreamin’ about”
.
Someone who knew he was taking a big risk
by rapping about Jesus. Someone who knew
the world would probably not listen because,
face it, the world doesn’t wanna hear what a
bible-thumper has to say. But Mr. West
shrugged his shoulders, held up his head and
rapped :
.
‘I ain’t here to argue about his facial features
Or here to convert atheists into believers
I’m just tryna say the way school need
teachers
The way Kathie Lee needed Regis, that’s the
way I need Jesus.’
.
How many of you slamming him as the devil
incarnate can take such step of boldness?
.
Christians judge too much. They judge the lost
and judge people who go out of their way to
seek them, to make them feel they still
belonged. You are busy judging Kanye West,
you are busy judging Kirk Franklin for
refusing to judge Kanye West. You are
excusing yourself with ‘the bible says ‘be not
unequally yoked together with unbelievers ‘
Yet Jesus ate with unbelievers, he attended a
wedding hosted of unbelievers and saved
them from embarrassment by turning water
into wine. All you care about is the sheep that
are ‘safe’ in the fence, the church. You forget
wolves and leopards can leap and climb over
fences.
.
Your brother in the lord abused the bus
conductor on his way to church but you didn’t
see it so he is not a lost sheep. Your sister in
the Lord gave in to the temptation of a yoruba
demon on Saturday and on Sunday she is
leading praise and worship and you are
dancing like David danced and thinking
‘sister Nkechi is so full of the spirit today’.
Your man of God, in a moment of ‘weak faith’
dipped his hands into the church funds to
pay his daughter’s university school fees and
as he preaches, battling with his conscience
right there on the pulpit, your respect for him
is busy soaring as you listen to him,
impressed by his spirituality .
.
No wonder Jesus wept.
.
A lot of Christians slam Kanye as a blasphemer
and an infidel castro. Yet they forget art
doesn’t always look face when it comes to
religion and beliefs. As a writer, I have
written stories where a character goes: ‘Fuck
the Lord’ and things considered sacre, even to
me, are brought down and dragged in the
mud of plots, dialogues and whatever makes
the story tick. Yet I believe strongly in these
things. I can write a story ridiculing miracles
of healing and provision yet I believe strongly
in these things.
.
(It is called persona.
.
My lecturer(and a couple of friends) once
remarked that I am one thing on facebook but
in person I am a different thing.
.
It is called, Oya, spell it with me:
P.E.R.S.O.N.A! )
.
Because once I draw lines when it comes to
my art, it is over for me as an artist. Art is
supposed to transcend. Art is supposed to be
like wind. You do not draw a line and tell the
wind not to blow past. Even the bible says
‘the wind blows where it wishes, you hear it
but can’t predict it.’
.
Stop slamming artists for being unpredictable.
.
Does the Kanye/Kirk collaboration bring glory
to God? Do the lyrics ridicule God or draw
attention to him? Stop being a touchy
churchbaby. Nobody is guaranteed heaven.
Eniyan fit jabo any fucking time.
.
Stop slamming other Christians for refusing to
conform to your idea/opinions of love and
fellowship.
.
Stop being ignorant and overreligious. It is a
bad mix.
.
Stop making Jesus regret not asking his father
to send 12 legions of angels to save him as he
hung on the cross.
.
Stop giving Christianity a bad name, o ye
loveless folks with iroko trees in your eyes
who can miraculously see a microsm of germ
in another person’s eye.
.
Stop chasing people away from the Lord.
.
Stop preaching the gospel of segregation
instead of the good news of Love and Grace
and Faith and Joy Unspeakable and full of
Glory in the Lord.
.
Amen, anyone?
.
Sincerely,
D. A
