DEAD NIGHT | by Nwachukwu Olusegun Nwachukwu

[For the hiatus between second semester and summer
school in Babcock University]

I
Dead night, dead night
In thee I find no life:
No torch to sight
Or begin any strife

Dead night, dead night
Your stars shine for no one
Dead night, dead night
I wish that you were gone
II
Your darkness creeps up on me
As slithering skins:
Your beamed silence bites
My very existence, O dead night!

Your loneliness clothes me
With fear
Your laziness lures me
To slothfulness, O dead night!
III
Dead night, dead night
In your peak tide, I drip:
You have no light.
From your dark dreams, I sip

Dead night, dead night
For the crow, I rejoice…
Dead night, dead night
You return, sans my choice.
